The Sound of Music is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The musical, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II, was the last musical by the famous partnership, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the musical opened on Broadway in 1959. In 1965, the Broadway musical was adapted as a film musical, and by 1966, The Sounds of Music became the highest-grossing film of all-time, an honour that the film held for five years. Today the Broadway musical continues to undergo numerous revivals including a brand new production directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien that is currently on tour across Norther America.
