The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra) was originally a novel by Gaston Leroux, but today the name is associated to the film and musical which continues to be performed all over the world. The plot centers on a beautiful soprano who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives in the opera house. The musical by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart opened in London’s West End in 1986, and in 2012, the musical celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance, the first production ever to do so.
